Detective Crescent Dietrich vowed never to return to Watkins Ridge. A bullet and her grandmother’s cancer diagnosis changed that. Now she’s back, touching a past she spurned long ago.
Alex Westmore appreciates God’s humor, but when hard-nosed Cress Dietrich is plunked into the middle of the family farm controversy—and his part in the sale of a centennial farm—he’s not laughing. He promised her grandmother secrecy, and Alex always keeps his word. But this time, his pledge might break Cress’s heart.
He wants her trust and love. He knows you can’t have one without the other. But can Cress escape the shadows of the past in time to embrace the simple light of her future? With God’s grace, she can… in Watkins Ridge.

I loved this book and finished it in one day because I couldn't bear to put it down. The story, the characters, kept me flipping pages as quickly as I could.Cress, the street-hardened, wounded cop has gotten good at shutting everyone out. Including her family. And even though she's come home to lick her wounds, she's not about to let the handsome, slick-mannered lawyer who talked her grandmother out of her property anywhere close.
I loved Cress's independent attitude and the fact that even though she's been hurt, she's still determined to protect the ones she loves as well as innocent victims. The fact that she can handle a Glock doesn't hurt, either. She's one tough female and proud of it. Better watch out, Alex!
Alex might have been the kid from the wrong side of the tracks but not anymore. He's made something of himself in spite of a family reputation that small-town memory hasn't quite forgotten, but that past has made him pretty good at taking on challenges. And the pretty cop who's caught his eye is definitely a challenge. He's going to need all the persistence he's got to win her over.
Alex is a complete sigh-worthy hero. His gentleness and sense of humor in dealing with Cress, his integrity in his business dealings (very important to the story but no spoilers here), and his honor all made me fall in love with him. He's the perfect man for Cress. Now if only she'll realize it. :-)
I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the Watkins Ridge series to see what happens with the other members in this family. And I highly recommend you give Safely Home a try. It's a wonderful, heart-warming read.

Safely Home A Christian Story of Facing the Past and Embracing the Future Watkins Ridge Book 1 edition by Ruth Logan Herne Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
No this book does not have a lot of bible inspirational words. Yet there are references about God and all going to church and being blessed. But it is clean, no sex. Only a few curse words, usually caught & gotten onto by a kid - you know when words slip out. There was also only 3-4 mentions of beer as to the men wanting one & even then they either chose not to or it was only the 2 for the week limit.
Instead this book is more about life as some of us have known it. There is romance, physical/emotional abuse, a female cop's leg having to heal because of a gun shot & learning about her other problems, a child who was kidnapped being found, a granny who wanted to keep secret the problems her late husband had caused. And it was all well written. I spent today (Saturday) reading it. Could not put it down.
- I Do NOT tell readers about actual scenes in a book - I would rather you read them yourself. But I do want to mention the different short paragraphs by a boy who is living with an older woman who treats him badly - don't get discouraged because you don't know why this is put in the book in various areas. You will be distressed over what he is going through and you Will find out who this boy is. Just read and wonder and enjoy.
A battered and abused detective recovering from wounds both physical and emotional, a rough and tumble lawyer from the wrong side of the tracks, and a farmland heritage sold to the highest bidder . . .
From the first scene where Cress Dietrich stumbles around the kitchen on her injured leg in front of the oh-so-perfect and entirely-too-rich Alex Westmore until the final moment of the story, Cress and Alex explode the pages of Safely Home. They argue, they fight, they kiss, they make up, they share school-hood memories over ice cream and compassion for an injured horse. In short, the couple leaves you both delighted with the twists and turns of their romance and insanely curious as to what will happen next.
Personally, Alex Westmore stole this novel for me. Sure Cress is a great character, with attributes of both toughness and vulnerability, but Alex? Alex is absolutely wonderfully perfect! I wanted to wrap him up and take him home with me (and I already have a very wonderful man at home). Alex’s patience and understanding in dealing with Cress made me all warm and tingly as I read the story, and though Alex has some flaws to work through, his sweetness and determination to act honorably stole this novel for me.
Safely Home is the first of the new Watkins Ridge Series by Ruth Logan Herne. My only complaint is the other two books aren’t out yet. Write faster, Ms. Herne! Write faster!
I really enjoyed this story and I wasn't expecting to do so since there are 2 heroine careers I dislike - reporters and cops! The heroine in this story is a cop who's recovering from an injury and helping her grandmother who's about to start chemo. She has attitude but nothing I wouldn't expect from her point of view and from all she's dealing with. I got caught up in the little side story about the little boy and was a little disappointed I didn't get enough revenge in that area LOL but overall I enjoyed the book and could hardly put it down.
Also in this one the christian aspect wasn't too prevalent other than knowing the hero believed and the heroine had sorta given up on believing...the book is clean but a few scenes of the hero checking out her camisole and wondering about other attire might offend some people (though not me because I read romance pretty much all across the genre) but some of the Love Inspired romances quote scripture and have church scenes and make sure hero and heroine aren't unchaperoned, etc but this doesn't dwell on that stuff so it reads as very real yet clean - just not quite the same as the Love Inspired romances. As another reviewer said it lacks quoting scripture (though for me I found that added to the stars because I dislike a bunch of preachiness!)
I can't wait for Audra's story - hoping she gets Cruz...not sure about the other sister- think that one's anorexic and that's gonna be hard for me to read after dealing with a friend in my college years. But overall a nice relaxing read - not a whole lot of drama and thank goodness the theme isn't like the one in Running on Empty (another I couldn't put down once I got into it but a darker theme to me)
